Northern Metal Recycling , the North East’s largest independent metal recycling company, has invested £2.5 million in a new state-of-the-art scrap metal shear, significantly boosting capacity and supporting further regional growth.

The new Lefort 1450 shear — the largest machine of its kind in the North — has now been installed and is already helping the company process increasing volumes of scrap metal more efficiently.

The investment has effectively doubled NMR’s processing capacity and has already led to the creaƟon of new jobs, with further recruitment expected as the business continues to expand.

Founded in 2019, NMR has rapidly grown its presence across the region, opening addiƟonal sites in Blaydon, Sunderland and most recently at PD Ports in Middlesbrough.

From its PD Ports facility, the company now exports some of the largest scrap shipments in the UK, loading vessels carrying up to 50,000 tonnes of recycled metal desƟned for steel mills and customers around the world.

Emlyn murphy- commercial director said: “This is a major investment for the business and another significant step forward for Northern Metal Recycling. “The new shear dramatically increases our processing capabiliƟes and allows us to operate more efficiently while suppporting growing demand both in the UK and internationally.

“We’re proud to continue investing in the North East, creaƟng jobs and strengthening the region’s role within the global recycling and steel supply chain.”

The company says the investment underlines its long-term commitment to growth, sustainability and supporting the circular economy by processing and exporting recycled metals for reuse worldwide.
